  2. and writer. He travelled widely both as a
  3. slave and a free man. His autobiography, The
  4. Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah
  5. Equiano or Gustavus Vassa the African 1789,
  6. is one of the earliest significant works by
  7. an African written in English. Equiano was
  8. born near the river Niger in what is now
  9. Nigeria, captured at the age of ten and sold
  10. to slavers, who transported him to the West
  11. Indies. He learned English and bought his
  12. freedom at the age of 21. He subsequently
  13. sailed to the Mediterranean and the Arctic,
  14. before being appointed commissary of stores
  15. for freed slaves returning to Sierra Leone.
